Dawn DeVirgilio of ExactTarget exposes four myths about social media based on ExactTarget’s Subscribers, Fans & Followers research. These may  actually surprise you, as they run contrary to the conventional wisdom.

The reports of the death of e-mail are greatly exaggerated. You’ve probably heard a lot of chatter about social media like Twitter and Facebook rendering traditional e-mail obsolete. In fact, with Facebook’s recent announcement about enhanced messaging features, this myth has gained traction. But a closer look at the data suggests that e-mail usage has actually increased in recent months.

In addition, the notion of celebrity as the necessary characteristic Twitter’s success doesn’t  hold up. There will always be movie stars and athletes who attract hundreds of thousands of followers, but Twitter claims 370,000 new sign-ups every day. If anything, Twitter has become a celebrity creator. Otherwise obscure personalities gain wide attention through their tweets.
